Will's Weekly Roundup
Dec 26 - Jan 1
Will’s Weekly Roundup is a weekly newsletter of curated tech, business, and startup news (and some of my thoughts).
2022 was the year of AI. Here’s my breakdown of it.
This year has been marked by significant advancements in AI technology. From chatbots that can carry on human-like conversations to AI code programmers, these developments have the potential to revolutionize almost every industry.
Centered around all of these is generative AI. As the name suggests, this type of AI can generate new content, such as text, images, or music, based on input data. This is achieved through the use of machine learning algorithms that are trained on a large dataset of examples. Once trained, the AI model can use its understanding of the patterns and features present in the training data to generate new content that is similar to the examples it has seen before.
Some of the noteworthy generative AI projects that came out of 2022 were:
ChatGPT (by Open AI) - a chatbot known for its human-like responses to text prompts
Midjourney - generates images from text prompts
Dall-E 2 (by Open AI) - generates images from text descriptions with greater speed and flexibility
Stable Diffusion (by Stability AI) - generates images with greater realism than previous software
AlphaFold (by Deepmind) - a database of protein structure predictions that is open to scientific research
Copilot (by GitHub) - writes suggested code and entire programming functions in real-time, right from your code editor
You’ve most likely played around with ChatGTP and its text generation, but if you haven't tried out the image generation ones, I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DO SO. The easiest way I’ve found to access and use text-to-image generation technologies is through stablediffusionweb.com.
Given how far generative AI has come in 2022 alone, who knows what to expect in 2023? My prediction for this upcoming year is that we’re going to see the emergence of mainstream generative music technology. It may be OpenAI’s project “Jukebox” that generates music in a variety of genres and artist styles - or it may be by an AI research lab we haven’t even heard of yet. Time will only tell.
As OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman said, “the cost of intelligence and energy are going to be on a path towards near-zero” because of these technologies. AI is coming for our jobs but hasn’t taken them just yet.
2 Ideas On Goal Setting in 2023
Understand the Power of Anti-Goals
As we embark on the new year, it's crucial to not only focus on our desired outcomes, but also on the things we want to avoid during the journey to achieving them. These "anti-goals" can help prevent us from achieving a "Pyrrhic victory," or a success that comes at a cost that negates its value. It's essential to strive for our big goals, but we don't want to sacrifice our well-being, health, or sanity in the process. By considering our anti-goals, we can make sure we're working towards our objectives sustainably and healthily. (Topic Source: Sahil Bloom)
“It’s Either One Day, or Day One”
If you don't take action and start working towards your goal today, it's easy to keep finding excuses to put it off. Every day is a new opportunity to make progress, so don't get bogged down in planning and preparation. Remember that taking action generates momentum, and even small victories can add up and lead to big results. Whether you're starting a new work project or trying to develop a healthy habit, just start moving and let the momentum carry you forward.

“Faith is universal. Our specific methods for understanding it are arbitrary. Some of us pray to Jesus, some of us go to Mecca, and some of us study subatomic particles. In the end, we are all just searching for truth, that which is greater than ourselves.” ― Dan Brown
“When something fascinates you, pay attention to the details. The person who thinks, ‘That was cool’ is a consumer. The person who thinks, ‘How did they make something that cool?’ is on the path to being a creator.” ― James Clear
